Hydeia Broadbent Will Speak at Teen Summit
Keynote speaker, Hydeia Broadbent will speak at a Teen Summit in Florida. Ms. Broadbent will give a 60 minute presentation to a large audience filled with teens. The goal of the Summit is for the audience to walk away with a greater understanding of HIV/AIDS.
At birth, Hydeia was abandoned at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas where Patricia and Loren Broadbent adopted her as an infant. Although her HIV condition was congenital, she was not diagnosed as HIV Positive with advancement to AIDS until age three. The prognosis was that she would not live past the age of five, so she became the “test baby” for HIV medications that are currently in use today. Well, this “test baby” has defied the odds by 18 years which is valid proof that living with HIV/AIDS is very possible!
Broadbent debuted as an AIDS activist and public speaker was at the age six at one of her many visits to the hospital. By age 12 appeared on programs like Oprah, 20/20, Good Morning America and A Conversation with Magic Johnson. Over the next 10 years she became a notable speaker and guest panelist at some of America’s most respected educational institutions including Duke University, Clark Atlanta University, UCLA, USC, and Howard University. She has been interviewed by today’s prominent publications and television programs such as Essence Magazine, The New York Times, Seventeen, Nickelodeon, MTV, and BET. She has also been honored with a Red Cross Spirit Award and a 1999 Essence Award.
With her distinguished communication and presentation skills Broadbent is now a 23 year old consummate professional, international public speaker, and AIDS activist. She has an innate ability to bond with any audience, along with her dual capability as a productive individual and excellent team player with an instinctive knowledge of team building. Her primary goal is to provide a clear understanding of how to avoid at-risk behaviors through self-examination and informed decision-making. She says “…with all that we know about the virus, it is clear to me that contracting HIV/AIDS today is a choice. The truth is, people who engage in risky sexual behaviors or share IV needles help spread the virus. We must help our youth make wise choices.”
Broadbent founded a non-profit organization, Hydeia Broadbent and Friends. She has also has partnered up with one of the most prestigious HIV/AIDS organizations, We Care 4 U Services, a Las Vegas based non-profit outreach organization for children and families infected & affected with HIV/AIDS that strives to meet the needs of poverty stricken families by providing emergency funding for housing, food, and basic necessities. Their goal is to help these children and families help themselves. Incidentally, they will be prepared for society and ultimately live “normal” lives.
